Discernment vs. Judgment

Understanding the difference between discernment and judgment is on my mind at the moment.
A very memorable dialogue took place a few years back at a private women’s retreat I held.  Heated and passionate views were voiced about which practice is “good” and which is “bad”.  There was even obvious confusion about which word went with what action.
If we look at the Miriam Webster definition of each, it is easy to see the difference.  But, is it as easy to know the difference when using these practices in our own lives?
DISCERNMENT:
the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure

Which Way Do I Go?
Discernment is vital in our daily interaction with the world.  As you can see from the above definition, it pertains to being able to understand what is in front of us and the likely ramifications of making a specific decision or going in a certain direction. It is our Divine Right to Discern!

Note:  It’s not uncommon to run into the occasional accusation that you have imposed your judgment, rather than using your Divine Right to Discern, especially if the other person doesn’t agree with your observation. However, getting quiet, going within, and getting in touch with that subtle, inner sense helps us distinguish between “yes, this feels right for me,” or “no, this doesn’t feel like it is in my best interest” will always steer you right.

JUDGMENT:
an opinion so pronounced
Fair is Fair, RIGHT?!

A judgment is simply a view expressed in a way that makes it sound like the only “truth”.  It may not be the truth at all, in fact, it is only an assessment, and generally favors our own beliefs over the beliefs of others involved.

Judgment is often used to control or dominate situations and/or others.  It is not used to make sound decisions, but rather to keep someone or something “in its place”.
